Apply Six Pay Commission or Go Away
Wednesday, January 6, 2010 17:02The viva-voce examination of LLB (Hons) scheduled for Wednesday has been 
postponed. Reason being that teachers at Lucknow University (LU) will boycott teaching activity on the campus. They will be joined by at least 12,500 higher education teachers from all over the state in a ‘Chalk down’ protest on Wednesday.
The protest is to highlight the teachers’ concern to the state government over the implementation of the sixth pay commission recommendations. The teachers associated with Lucknow University Teachers’ Association (LUTA), Lucknow University Associated Colleges Teachers Association (LUACTA) and other bigger teacher outfits will give an awakening call to boycott work and press for their demand on the day.
“If they (government) do not listen to us now we will continue our protest,” said Anil Shukla, president, LUTA. We were promised in our last protest that government will get back to us within two days but so far nothing has happened, said Shukla.
In fact, University Grants Commission (UGC) had approved salary scales for higher education teachers at par with the sixth pay commission report last year. State government has to bear only 20% of the increased salary for higher education teachers as 80% of it has to be borne by the UGC.
The government had announced in February that it would provide the increased salary scales to teachers as per the recommendations from January, 2006. But it is still to be realized.
Another bone of contention is that government is not ready to pay to university and college teachers their due arrears for the period between January 1, 2006 to November 30, 2008, stating that it would treat the arrears for the said period to be “imaginary”. The teachers will therefore, get their revised salary as per UGC recommendations from December 1, 2008.
