Sunday, December 27, 2009 14:55The Central Institute of English was the brainchild of the first Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. CIE, as it was called then, was set up in 1958 in Hyderabad to train teachers of English. In April 1972, the Institute broadened its scope to include the major foreign languages, and was renamed the Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages. CIE became CIEFL, and in July 1973 in recognition of its high standards of excellence, the University Grants Commission accorded the Institute the status of a deemed university.
The EFL University (then CIEFL) Campus at Lucknow was started in 1979 to provide training to university/college teachers of English in northern India, but it slowly emerged as a full-fledged Centre offering PG Diploma in the Teaching of English, degree and research programme.
The campus has been actively engaged in conducting refresher courses for university and college teachers, proficiency courses for a wide spectrum of learners and contact programme for the participants of Postgraduate Certificate course in the Teaching of English. The campus also offers a Postgraduate Diploma in Communication. All programme run by the Campus are face-to-face and are not offered through the distance mode. The campus has its own library and hostel.
